چکیده

Feature Earlier this month the team of scientists that has worked over the past decade on the Census of Marine Life project released an inventory of species distribution and diversity in key global ocean areas. The researchers have combined information collected over centuries with data obtained during the census to create a list of species in 25 biologically representative regions — from the Antarctic through temperate and tropical seas to the Arctic. The aim is that the survey will help set a baseline for measuring human effects on the ecosystems along with those of climate change. It is also hoped the work will help in future decisions on exploration of still poorly explored regions, especially the abyssal depths, and on poorly studied, smaller species. Australian and Japanese waters, which have revealed 33,000 species, were found to be the most biodiverse. The oceans off China, the Mediterranean Sea and the Marine revelations A ten-year survey is providing insights into marine species in 25 key ocean areas around the globe that will provide a vital reference against future changes. Nigel Williams reports. Gulf of Mexico, sampled before the recent oil spill, are the next highest in species diversity. Thirteen committees comprising more than 360 scientists created the initial profile of known marine

An Overview on Marine Sponge-Symbiotic Bacteria as Unexhausted Sources for Natural Product Discovery

Microbial symbiotic communities of marine macro-organisms carry functional metabolic profiles different to the ones found terrestrially and within surrounding marine environments. These symbiotic bacteria have increasingly been a focus of microbiologists working in marine environments due to a wide array of reported bioactive compounds of therapeutic importance resulting in various patent regis...

Ecological role of purple sea urchins.

Sea urchins are major components of marine communities. Their grazing limits algal biomass, and they are preyed upon by many predators. Purple sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) are among the best studied species. They live in environments that alternate between two stable states: luxuriant, species-rich kelp forests and sea urchin-dominated "barrens." The transition from one state to ...

The Hunches a Language Teacher Lives by in an Action Research: Revelations of an L2 Writing Teacher

The researchers in this study aimed to demonstrate how impossible it could be for a language teacher to take fixed, systematic routes of action in recent Action Research designs.  This was instantiated in an L2 (here, English) 'essay writing' course among some Persian speaker university students majoring in Hygiene Sciences (Family and Environment). Evidences regarding individualistic progress ...

Palaeobiology: Ecological Revelations in Ediacaran Reproduction

The biology of Ediacaran organisms - the oldest fossils of large multicellular life - has been notoriously hard to decipher, as they show little obvious relation to extant life forms. Ecological analyses, rather than anatomy, yield new revelations about their reproduction.

Measuring Accumulated Revelations of Private Information by Multiple Media

A metric has been developed for measuring privacy degradation when various types of media reveal private information about a person. The metric, which is based on joint entropy, quantifies accumulated revelations of information about various personal attributes. Application of this metric to entries posted on a social networking service and to leaks from a company database containing personal i...
